Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Bitcoin timestamping and Eternity Bits
What is Bitcoin timestamping?
Bitcoin timestamping is a process that creates an immutable, cryptographic proof that a document existed at a specific point in time. We hash your document and embed that hash into the Bitcoin blockchain, creating a permanent record that cannot be altered or deleted.
How does Eternity Bits work?
Simply upload your document to our secure interface. We compute a SHA256 hash of your file locally in your browser, so your document never leaves your device. After payment, we embed this hash into a Bitcoin transaction, creating a permanent timestamp on the blockchain.
Is my document stored on the blockchain?
No, only the SHA256 hash of your document is stored on the blockchain. Your original file never leaves your device and is never uploaded to our servers. This ensures complete privacy while still providing cryptographic proof of existence.
How much does it cost?
Document timestamping costs $9 per file. This is a one-time fee that includes the Bitcoin transaction fees and provides you with a permanent, immutable timestamp that will last forever.
How long does the process take?
After payment, your document hash is queued for Bitcoin anchoring. The transaction is typically broadcast within minutes, and you'll receive confirmation once it's included in a Bitcoin block (usually 10-60 minutes).
Can I verify my timestamp later?
Yes! You can verify your timestamp anytime using our verification tool at /verify/. Simply enter your Bitcoin transaction ID to view all the details including block height, confirmations, and your original file hash.
What file types are supported?
Any file type is supported - documents, images, videos, archives, code files, etc. Since we only hash the file content, the file type doesn't matter. The hash uniquely represents your specific file regardless of format.
Is this legally valid?
Bitcoin timestamps provide strong cryptographic evidence of document existence at a specific time. While legal acceptance varies by jurisdiction, blockchain timestamps are increasingly recognized in courts worldwide as valid proof of prior art and document integrity.
What happens if Eternity Bits goes offline?
Your timestamp is permanently stored on the Bitcoin blockchain, independent of our service. Even if our website disappears, you can always verify your timestamp using any Bitcoin explorer and the transaction ID we provide.
Can timestamps be faked or manipulated?
No. Bitcoin's proof-of-work consensus mechanism makes it computationally impossible to alter historical transactions. Once your timestamp is confirmed in a Bitcoin block, it becomes part of an immutable ledger secured by the world's most powerful computer network.
Do you offer bulk timestamping?
Currently we offer individual document timestamping. For bulk timestamping needs, please contact us at hello@eternitybits.com to discuss enterprise solutions.
What is the refund policy?
Due to the immediate and irreversible nature of Bitcoin transactions, we cannot offer refunds once a timestamp has been successfully processed and broadcast to the Bitcoin network. Please ensure your file is correct before completing payment.
Where does Eternity Bits source its Bitcoin?
We maintain minimal Bitcoin holdings solely to pay network transaction fees. Any Bitcoin we acquire is sourced exclusively from regulated exchanges that comply with all applicable anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) requirements. We are not a financial service and do not hold, store, or transmit customer funds.
Do OP_RETURN transactions move money?
No. OP_RETURN transactions used for timestamping do not transfer any Bitcoin value - they only embed data (your document hash) into the blockchain. These transactions are specifically designed for data storage, not monetary transfers, which means they fall outside traditional money transmission regulations.
Is Eternity Bits compliant with financial regulations?
Yes. Our timestamping service operates as a data anchoring service, not a financial service. We do not transmit, hold, or store customer value - we only embed document hashes into the blockchain using OP_RETURN transactions. We maintain minimal Bitcoin holdings solely for network fees, sourced from regulated exchanges, and comply with applicable data protection and business regulations.
